Frequently Asked Questions

  • How well does the board hold its color?

For boards that are colored (Standard and Premium Grade), the colorant contains a UV protectant so that there should be minimal fading over the life of the board. Any minimal fading that does occur should be consistent due to the colorant being blended throughout the entire board.

  • What colors are available?

Firstar will be making selected lumber profiles and colors. Those that are not manufactured at Firstar may be in stock, or can be ordered from our partner facility Greenwell:

    • Basic Grade is uncolored and has no embossing option (typically dark grey in appearance).

    • Standard Grade: Light Gray, Medium Gray, Dark Gray, Taupe/Tan, Cedar, Espresso Brown, Black. Embossing available.

    • Premium Grade: Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Light Gray, Medium Gray, Dark Gray, Taupe/Tan, Cedar, Espresso Brown, Black. Embossing available.

  • How strong is the lumber?

Our plastic lumber has not been graded for structural purposes so main supporting structures should still be made out of traditional materials.

  • Has there been any testing on the lumber? By who?

The 2x6 lumber has been tested by the UNL College of Engineering for compression, flexural, creep, fire and UV. The results showed it was feasible to use the 2x6 pieces with an 18-inch span length though it is not common in the industry to use 16 inches on center. Weathering the specimens added to strength. Test results can be found here:

  • How does it compare to other plastic lumber brands?

Solutions Plastic Lumber is not a composite and is made from 100% hard-to-recycle plastics. This means:

    • 100% recycled and recyclable. As it is not a composite and is 100% plastic, when it reaches its end-of-life, it can be reground and made back into new plastic lumber again.

    • Cheaper than competitors as it is made from plastics previously destined for the landfill and not competing with existing recycling markets for feedstock.

  • If we don't have an item in stock, what is the ordering timeframe?

Ordering times will vary based on volumes and product ordered. Please contact us to enquire.
